DISCLAIMER:
When you hike in the mountains and all other wilderness areas, there are unavoidable risks that anyone who ventures off on a trail must understand, respect and most importantly be prepared for. The hikes in this visual guide vary significantly in their degree of difficulty, so be sure to carefully read the tech info and trail descriptions before you attempt a hike. Know your personal limitations! Weather and other forces of Mother Nature can drastically alter and sometimes even destroy trails in an instant. What may be a safe hike to do on a pleasant day can be completely unsafe on another because of adverse weather conditions. It's always wise to check with the ranger's station for the latest trail conditions.

You can greatly reduce the chance of something going wrong on a hike by being knowledgeable, prepared and in good physical condition. There are a number of good books and Sierra Club courses on the subject. Take advantage of them! Remember, the main reason people get into life threatening situations in the wilderness is being caught in bad weather. Always, get accurate and current weather information before you embark on a hike or backpack. Wear the proper clothing that your hike requires. Be sure to have a daypack with plenty of extra food, clothing and water, and stay on the trail. Never go hiking in the wilderness unprepared!

These admonishments are not meant to frighten you off the trails. Countless people enjoy safe hikes every day of the year. Nevertheless, one aspect of being on a trail in a wilderness setting, is the inherent risks that you do not encounter in the safety of your home. Every hiker must assume, understand and be properly equipped to deal with these risks. These risks, with the use of sound judgment, can be dealt with in a safe manner. You, alone, are responsible for your personal safety.
