Go left, or east, and walk on the road for about 200 yards, staying to your left. Soon you'll pick up the final leg of the San Gabriel Peak trail, which will be on your left. The trail will drop 50 feet initially and then climb the last half- mile to the peak.

Return to the fire road (actually the Mt. Disappointment Rd.) and head west until you get to the road that leads to the top of Mount Disappointment. Turn left and follow the road for a quarter-mile to the summit.

Return the way you came, remembering to turn left on the paved road once you've walked down from Mount Disappointment.

Walk about 100 yards to the west keeping a sharp lookout for the trail you climbed up, which will be on the right. Follow the trail back to your car.

Cool Fact: During the height of our nation's " Cold War " with the Soviet Union, back in the 1950's, Mount Disappointment's summit block was leveled for the installation of a U.S. Army Nike Missile launch site. It's prominent location and unobstructed views in all directions made it an ideal spot to help defend The Southland against the " Red Menace ".
