DESCRIPTION
Joshua Tree Nat'L
Park is more famous for it's rock climbing, than for it's hiking
trails. One exception to that rule would be the superb hike to
the summit of 5,470foot Ryan Mountain. The
peak's prominent location in the heart of the park is perfectly
situated for 360-degree panoramic views. Spread out below you
are the Wonderland of Rocks, Lost Horse Valley, Queen Valley,
Pleasant Valley and the distant giants, Mounts' San Jacinto and
San Gorgonio, some fifty miles away. There isn't a more comprehensive,
or a more breathtaking view to be had (for a hiker, that is!)
in the entire park. Rock climbing and cross-country hiking are
really the best ways to experience the subtle magic of Joshua
Tree, but don't overlook the Ryan Mountain trail. There isn't
a better-established hiking trail in the park, especially if you
like mountain trails with elevation gain. The well-engineered
footpath gains 700-feet in 2 miles so be prepared for some climbing.
Don't be discouraged though, because your upward toil will be
rewarded with ever-expanding vistas. The trail travels through
a boulder and Joshua Tree dotted landscape to Ryan's gently rounded
summit. From here you will see a vast portion of the protected
lands of Joshua Tree National Park as well as the Mojave National
Preserve. I love this trail because, despite the short mileage,
you still feel like you got a good workout. However, the outstanding
views are really what keeps me coming back to this hike year after
year. |

THE
TOUR
The
hike starts off near some interesting rock formations and then
begins a steady climb thru somewhat rocky terrain as it wraps
around the mountain and climbs above a canyon.
You then will begin a series of switchbacks amongst a sparse assortment
of Joshua trees. The grade will begin to level out when you finally
reach an area of isolated fire damage just off the trail. At this
point you are within a 1/4-mile of the mostly flat summit. Enjoy
your time on the summit and return the way you came. |
