Directions
to Trailhead
From HWY 395 in Lone Pine:
Turn west on Whitney Portal road, which
is the only stoplight in the small town of Lone Pine.
Continue up the road heading towards the eastern face of the
Sierra for several miles past the turn-offs for Horseshoe Meadow
Rd. and Movie Rd.
Keep a sharp lookout for the sign indicating the Lone Pine campground,
6.7 miles from HWY 395 on Whitney Portal Rd.
Turn left and follow the road into the campground and park in
the day use parking area located at the far western end of the
campground.
This is also the spot to pick up the Whitney Portal National
Recreation Trail, located just a few yards west of the parking
area at the edge of the campground.
SPECIAL
NOTE:
If you plan to hike only the portion of
this trip that starts at the roadend at Whitney Portal (elev.
8,300 ft.), continue driving past the Lone Pine campground up
into the mountains 11.1 miles from HWY 395.
Day-use parking is just to the left of Mount Whitney trailhead.
Park here and begin your hike.
